When the Library of the Royal Swedish Academy of Music was founded in 1771, the individual
pieces of music were arranged by medium of performance. No attention was given to
provenance, e.g. whether the material was the Nachlass of an indvidual composer, a
collection amassed over the years by an institution or inidividual, or a single item,
purchased or donated.
When the card catalogue that is still in use was begun around 1900, the guiding principle
remained the same: music and books were arranged without regard to provenance. Letters
were filed separately and entered into their own card catalogue.
Extensive archives and collections of works by Swedish composers remained unprocessed,
since there was rarely time to catalogue the individual items. Recent decades have seen an
increased awareness of the respect de fonds: today composer archives and major
collections are invariably kept together, and access is provided by finding aids.
The following list of such finding aids to the library's many Nachlässe
of Swedish composers from the 19th and 20th centuries (18th-century materials remain
dispersed) is not complete. There are various reasons for this:
The finding aids provided here cover composers' personal archives that have been kept together as a unit. They contain autograph music manuscripts (i.e., in the composer's own hand) or copies by others. Some also contain correspondence, press cuttings, literary texts, photographs, concert programs, and other such documents. Music and books that belonged to the composer but are not his or her own works have usually been excluded, unless they contain substantial annotations or the like.
The finding aids are all in Swedish, but since musical terminology is largely international it should be possible to make use of them.
In addition, the library may hold other autographs by the same composer in its general collection. These can only be accessed through the card catalogue. Printed editions (but not manuscripts) catalogued after ca. 1986 are found in the online catalogue.
All rare materials in the library may be consulted in the reading room without formalities: with advance notification, however, we are able to provide better service: please contact rarecoll@muslib.se Photocopying is not allowed, but in some cases microfilms exist from which copies may be ordered ; otherwise scanned copies can be produced by the library See price list (in Swedish).

asterisk * marks an archive or collection for which a finding aid exists that
has not yet been digitized. When there is no link or asterisk there is no finding aid.
These finding aids only exist when the material is not to be found in the Library's card catalogue. It is always necessary to consult that as well. |
