INTRODUCTION

The International Association of Music Libraries (IAML) was founded in 1951 to promote international cooperation in the music library field and to support the interest of the profession. In 1980 the name was changed to International Association of Music Libraries, Archives and Documentation Centres but the acronym was retained.

From the first constitution the following aims become clear:

- strengthening the bonds between music libraries
- coordinating and stimulating activities of such libraries
- support of projects dealing with music bibliography and music library science
- encouragement of exchange and lending of documents
- furthering the inventorying of music collections to make them available to researchers
- conservation and protection of the music heritage in all its forms
- international cooperation with other organizations in the field of music, musicology, documentation and library science
- arranging international music library meetings

IAML's history, however, dates back to 1949, when the work took place within the organization Association Internationale des Bibliothèques et des Musées Musicaux. The first international meeting for music libraries was held in Florence in 1949 and it was decided that the fruitful discussions held there should continue next year in connection with the International Musicological Society's (IMS) congress in Lüneburg. Here, it was agreed to create a permanent international body and a provisional commission was elected. Valentin Denis from Belgium was appointed chairman and Vladimir Fédorov from France secretary. The commission met to discuss a future constitution. This was drawn up by V. Fédorov and M. Van der Hagen, chef de la Division des Musées de l'Unesco, and M.G.-H. Riviere, president of International Council of Museums (ICOM). The commission was also responsible for planning a IAML conference. At this conference, which took place in Paris in 1951, the proposed constitution was accepted and the Association established.

Working commissions devoted to different subjects and types of music libraries were immediately established and soon thereafter national branches began to appear in various countries.

Two other international bodies have grown out of the Association, the International Association of Sound Archives (IASA, established in 1969) and the International Association of Music Information Centres (IAMIC, established in 1986).

IAML is still active today. Conferences are held annually. The work is carried out through professional branches and subject commissions. Sometimes a branch or commission has working groups with special tasks for a defined period of time. The branches and commissions of IAML have varied over the years; today we have the following:

Branches:

Archives and Music Documentation Centres
Broadcasting and Orchestra Libraries
Libraries in Music Teaching Institutions
Public Libraries
Research Libraries

Commissions:

Audio-Visual Materials
Bibliography
Cataloguing
Service and Training

IAML is governed by a Council, which includes national delegates and representatives of its various working units, a Board, made up of elected and appointed officers, and the General Assembly.

IAML has a journal,  Fontes artis musicae, founded in 1954. It is an important source of information, specially for those members who cannot attend the conferences. In Fontes we find minutes from meetings held by the Council and General Assembly. The Association today has ca 2,000 members in 54 countries.

IAML itself is a member of different international organizations in the field of music, librarianship and archives. These are as follows: International Federation of Library Associations (IFLA), International Council on Archives (ICA), International Music Council (IMC), European Bureau of Library Information and Documentation Associations (EBLIDA).

Through joint commissions, IAML co-sponsors with other international associations, notably the IMS, four series of bibliographical tools; the inventories of musical sources, musical literature, musical iconography and the musical press. These so called "R projects" are:

RISM Répertoire international des sources musicales, centre in Frankfurt/Main

RILM Répertoire international de littérature musicale, centre in New York

RIdIM Répertoire international d'iconographie musicale, centre in New York

RIPM Répertoire international de la presse musicale, centres in Maryland and Parma-Colorno

A special IAML Archive Committee was  given the task, in 1984, of collecting documents that should be deposited in the IAML archive. The Music Library of Sweden agreed to house the archive; the first documents arrived in 1987. Documents of the national branches are not found in the IAML archive but stay in their respective countries. The international archive mainly consists of papers of presidents, general secretaries and treasurers in the organization. There are also documents of some branches and commissions as well as the R projects. In doing the arrangement work, the appraisal has resulted in disposal of copies in general and vouchers older than 10 years.
