The Music Library of Sweden
Loan policy (summary)
Everyone can use
the reading room areas, catalogues and reference collection and can request
materials for study on-site without a library card. To check out material a card is required. You
can order material through the
Online
catalogue, and renew your loans as
well.
Paging materials
Only the Reference Collection is open to the public. Other books and music are
stored in stacks and only accessible to the staff. Paging is done continuously during opening hours. To
receive materials the same day, requests must be put in 30 minutes before
closing, at the latest (see Opening hours).
Checking out materials
requires a library card, which is issued against a valid ID (social
security number). The card must be shown when collecting your loans.
By accepting a library card, you agree to observe these lending
conditions in the wording applicable from time to time, i.e. including any
amendments made after the library card has been issued. You also agree
to keep yourself informed of the current wording of these lending
conditions. A binding loan agreement is entered into by the use of a valid lending
card.
Non-Swedish citizens may borrow without a Swedish ID if they are staying for
longer than three months and present a passport.
Library cards are issued for free by the library. There is a charge (40
SEK) for lost cards.
Loans are personal: they must be collected
by the borrower and must not be transferred to another person. The
loan period for regular books and music is 30 days. The borrower is
personally liable for lost materials. Anyone who disregards the lending
conditions may be barred from further borrowing.
Material less than ca. 100 years is generally available for use outside
the library (with the exception of periodicals and reference material).
Manuscripts and other rare
materials must neither be used outside the reading area, nor photocopied
or photographed, but you may order scanned pictures and/or paper copies from
the pictures or from previously made microfilms.
All loans are free of charge. Copies etc. are subject to a charge.

Inter-library loans
are materials or copies of articles sent between libraries.
From SMB
Private individuals with a valid library card can order loans through the
online catalogue, but
they must be picked up at the library.
If you live outside of Stockholm you may order inter-library loans through a local
library and collect them there. The same applies to those without an SMB
library card.
Inter-library loans within Sweden and from libraries in the Nordic
countries are free of charge from us.
Loans of books and chamber music etc. from other countries are also free.
Orchestral and wind band music is subject to a charge. Copies of articles in
periodicals and the like are always subject to a charge.

To SMB
Music or books/articles not available at SMB may be requested from another
library. The decision whether to order an inter-library loan rests with SMB. For material on loan from outside libraries, the lending conditions of the
lending
library apply.
Material in another library in the Stockholm area can usually not be
ordered through inter-library loan.
Inter-library loans within the Nordic countries are free of charge.
Loans from other countries are subject to a charge. Copies of articles in
periodicals and the like are always subject to a charge.
