Orchestra Collection

For contact addresses, see the Swedish version of this page.

Lending scores and parts to orchestras and ensembles has long been an important part of the activities of the Music Library of Sweden.

The orchestral sets comprise material bought directly by the Library, as well as the former central music library of the Sveriges Orkesterföreningars Riksförbund (SOR), now part of Sveriges Orkesterförbund (the Association of Swedish Orchestras), which was deposited at the Library in the 1930s and donated by the Association in 1996. There is now a total of some 6,000 works (some in more than one edition).

The collection also contains wind band sets originating in the central library of the Swedish Regionmusiken (a successor of the military music organisation), which was transferred to the Library when this institution was abolished in 1988. The collection has since been substantially enriched.

Terms

In principle, loans are open to everybody, but these collections are first and foremost intended for Swedish orchestras and ensembles. Loans outside the Nordic countries are only permitted in exceptional cases.

Within Sweden, loans are free of charge. Otherwise there is a fee of SEK 500 per title,  plus postage. The circulation period is 2 months. Please contact us for other terms.

The Library does not provide rental materials: this is the responsibility of the individual orchestra. A list of Swedish music publishers is available at the web site of the Swedish Music Publishers' Association (Svenska musikförläggareföreningen).

Catalogues

These search tips are primarily for our own  online catalogue. Corresponding searches can be made in Libris: see their help texts.
Orchestral materials can be ordered through the online catalogue, by email, fax or phone.

Orchestral sets and wind band music bought after 1986 are accessible in our online catalogue

To find music for a particular medium of performance (including arrangements for that medium), use the Free text search and enter one of the following codes (the easiest way is to copy from here and paste):

xlb
(= concertos)

xlc
(=  chamber orchestra)

xld
(=  string orchestra)

xle
(=  symphony orchestra)

xlf
(=  wind band)

To find works for either symphony orchestra or string orchestra: you need to use CCL search. .Enter

kl=xle OR kl=xld
(kl=classification - case is optional for all terms).

The following search will find music for chamber orchestra as well:

kl=xle OR kl=xld OR kl= xlc

AND and OR cannot be combined in the same search, but other search terms can be entered as appropriate, for example the name of a composer,  one or more words from the title, or a solo instrument (e.g., violin, piano) in concertos.

kl=xlb AND piano
(= piano concertos)

The result is a list of titles and composer names. Click on the title to get more detailed information. (If you only search on the codes, the lists will be fairly long.)

The list can be sorted  alphabetically by composer or chronologically by date of publication.

These searches will also retrieve individual scores (i.e., when the Library does not have parts), vocal scores and miniature scores. At present there is no easy way to finds works  for which we have both scores and parts.
